It's waiting for you to awaken. And someday you will...learn to be still." - Henley & Frey The more I learn, the more I discover how much I really do not know; And I am humbled and awed by that discovery. |

My Favorites
Music: The Eagles (also Don Henley and Glenn Frey's solo material), Jimmy Buffett, Alabama, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (or simply "The Dirt Band" during their Rock years), The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood ( The Blind Faith Reunion featuring some great Rock guitar - Blind Faith, Traffic, Derek & The Dominos, Creem, Jimi Hendrix tribute), Bad Company, Doobie Brothers (Pre- Michael McDonald), Supertramp (esp. "Breakfast In America" release), Queen, Aerosmith, Little River Band, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel, Kansas, Styx, John Fogerty, John Mellencamp, Eddie Money, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Jeff Healey Band, Alan Parsons Project, Jackson Browne, John Denver ( "Some Days Are Diamonds" release), Neil Diamond (The early years, before he started rehashing the same overtly sentimental "easy listening" material. His earlier contributions to New York's famed Tin Pan Alley should earn him a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame), Simon & Garfunkel ("Momma took my Kodachrome away today." The end of an era - 06/23/09), Bread, Waylon, The Highwaymen (Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson), Hank Williams Jr., David Allan Coe (His "underground" material makes Jimmy Buffett still look like a Catholic altar boy. He is a real Country outlaw.), "Pancho and Lefty" (Willie and Merle. "You can talk all day bout' the next Billy Ray, but I'll cast my vote for Hag"), Travis Tritt, Ronnie Milsap, George Strait ("Amarillo By Morning" is one of my all time favorites), Clay Walker, Earl Thomas Conley, Dan Seals, Rodney Crowell, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis (debut material - "On The Other Hand," "Storms of Life," "Diggin' Up Bones," "1982," "Reasons I Cheat") Garth Brooks (debut material - before he became highly commercialized - "Not Countin' You," "Much Too Old To Look This Damn Young" - or, something like that. I guess that's my personal version), Restless Heart, Confederate Railroad (debut release), Tom T. Hall, Gretchen Wilson, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins ( "A White Sportscoat And & Pink Carnation" will always be a timeless classy look), Patty Loveless, Suzy Boggess, Doug Stone, Bruce Carroll, Michael Card, Steve Camp, Dallas Holm, Keith Green, Harvest, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Steve McDonald, Sarah McLachlan, Loreena Mckennit, Enya, Diana Krall, Chicago, Craig Chaquico, Spyro Gyra (A little "Original Cinema" anyone? Great title, great play on words, and great jazz with a great groove!), The Rippingtons, David Sanborn, Acoustic Alchemy, and Pieces of a Dream. Therefore, basically Classic Rock, Classic Country and some of the "New Country" when it was first getting started, hot Jazz and cool Blues, and toss some spiritual and some Classical into the mix (Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Strauss Jr., Wagner, R.Strauss, Liszt, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Grieg, & Schumann). TV Shows: Basically, anything that keeps me informed. If I'm going to watch TV, I want to at least make it worth my time- A "PBS mind in an MTV world". However... a little comedy and a couple of bottles of Negra Modelo doesn't hurt! Movies: Mother Night, Stalingrad, The Reader, Stalag 17, The Young Lions, Casablanca (Everybody goes to rix cafe), Kingdom of Heaven, Walk The Line, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Under The Tuscan Sun, The Last Temptation of Christ, Monty Python's "Life of Brian", Sophie Scholl, The Ninth Day, The Pianist, Shawshank Redemption, The American President, Uncle Buck, The Sea Chase, North To Alaska, Tombstone and The Doors (Val Kilmer was great in both roles), and Braveheart. And, I shouldn't forget "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy (Tolkein captured the essence of apocalyptic metaphysical dualism in his work of fiction, that once began in Persia with Zoroaster, or Zarathustra, and culminates with the book of Revelation. Not to mention, the computerized effects of the movie trilogy). Books: Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut, The Last Temptation of Christ by Nikos Kazantzakis, The Schopenhauer Cure by Irvin Yalom, The Secret Life of Carl Jung by Richard Noll, Wrestling with Angels by Naomi Rosenblatt, The Birth of Satan by Wray and Mobley, City of Thieves by David Benioff, Partly Right by Tony Campolo, Soul Survivor by Philip Yancey, Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, A History of the End of the World and God Against the Gods: The History of the War Between Monotheism and Polytheism by Jonathan Kirsch, The Twilight of Atheism by Alister McGrath, The Alphabet Versus the Goddess by Leonard Shlain, 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck, Discovering God: The Origins of the Great Religions and the Evolution of Belief by Rodney Stark, 120 Banned Books by Karolides, Bald, & Sova, Ain't Nobody's Business If You Do - The Absurdity of Consensual Crimes in a Free Society by Peter McWilliams( a great Libertarian primer), Measuring Eternity by Martin Gorst; And the books of Genesis ( the first basic psychological study of human relationships), Job ( The first inkling of "functional dualism" & Why do "the good" suffer?), The "Wisdom literature" (Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes), The Apocalptic books (Daniel, Enoch, & Revelation), the Prophetic books and their call for social justice (esp. Ezekiel), The Gospel of John (since it is an expanded and "ethereal" narrative in contrast to the synoptics), and the book of Romans ( a letter which metamorphosed into the first treatise on systematic theology). Quotes: "Angels can fly because they can take themselves lightly" - G.K. Chesterton "Only the shallow know themselves" -Oscar Wilde "The only normal people are the ones you don't know very well" - Joe Ancis "When we talk to God, we're praying. When God talks to us, we're schizophrenic." -Lily Tomlin "Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city."- George Burns "I like a woman with a head on her shoulders. I hate necks." -Steve Martin "A man is as young as the woman he feels." -an. "Men who never get carried away should be."- Malcolm Forbes "Though I am not naturally honest, I am so sometimes by chance."-Shakespeare "Look out for number one, and be careful not to step in number two."-Rodney Dangerfield "Attention to health is life's greatest hindrance."-Plato "Modern art is what happens when painters stop looking at girls and persuade themselves themselves they have a better idea."-John Ciardi "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." -Bill Cosby "Punctuality is the thief of time."- Oscar Wilde "Chamberlain's Law: Everything tastes more or less like chicken."- from The Official Rules "We all have the strength to endure the misfortunes of others." - La Rochefoucauld "Never except a drink from a urologist."-Erma Bombeck's father "The two hardest things to handle in life are failure and success."-Unknown "Ninety-eight percent of the adults in this country are decent, hard-working honest Americans. It's the other lousy two percent that get all the publicity. But then-we elect them."-Ibid. "Love is the only game not called on account of darkness." -Ibid. "You gotta live somewhere." -motto for Cleveland More About Me: Well ... my sabbatical was much shorter than intended, and I am no longer "incommunicado." The recent photo was a spur of the moment shot, when I found myself engaged in my own version of "Tim the Toolman's" Home Improvement 101. And I found myself covered with a light dusting of sawdust, and looking like a patriarch. -
