Thought this was interesting:

I am curious as to what you guys think about this idea. Is this a brilliant example of creative financing for programs for prisoners or is this sheriff violating the rights of these prisoners?

Charging convicts does nothing more than perpetuate their inability to enter mainsteam society.

Another insane waste of my money.

There are certain things inmates are getting for free that they should be charged for. But since this is initiated by budget problems, why not just cut them out entirely.

All they should get is the bare necessities. Three hots and a cot.

I'm all for charging inmates for being in jail. Why should we, the collective victims of these people, foot the bills any more than we have to ?

Make them pay rent, just like they would on the outside. They pay for snacks, why not rent ? Or they can pay money to an account to repay their victims for monetary losses.

I don't agree with charging for GED's, because education should be encouraged. An education might be the only thing to keep them from coming back.

Completely impractical and unviable ..but no doubt it will keep a bunch of otherwsie terminally useless people people busy attempting to collect... why not ask ..WHY does "the land of the free" imprison a far higher percentage of its population than any other nation on the planet..and why is it acceptable for the privatised prison industry charge the taxpayer (you) $40k per annum per prisoner ?

Doesn't this punish people who are poor? How many wealthy or even middle class folks are in jail (not prison, big difference). Some of the people being held in jails have not even had their trials yet. And letting themy have cookies they buy or small things from the store might keep down violence by providing a bit of humanity. I have no problem with charging those who can pay, but not for those who can't. And I suspect c harging only the wealthier would have serious constitutional problems.

There is no solution to that. We've already reached the tipping point with too many uneducated, self-entitled, weak, people in this country. Those are the people having children, our future, and it looks bleak.

What exactly does that have to do with charging prisoners for being incarcerated ?

"Those" are the people having children?! Surely this is not meant to be a characterization of most parents????????

Rich or poor doesn't play into it EM. It's another way to make jail a place where people don't want to be, while helping taxpayers defray the cost. Jail should be unpleasant as a deterrent not to come back. If they want cookies and humanity, they can have that by not victimizing others and staying out of jail.
