You just never know, maybe it'll help someone someday. Another tip would be to have a flashlight in the vehicle. Having one can help in many different situations.

Thanks Hazmat! And how many of us have our stuff ready to go in case of a fire?
Are important documents in a fire box or safety deposit box? Does your family have escape routes and meetup site? We practice these things at work, why not at home?

I do have a firebox in my home.

The flashlight in my car is the kind that you crank, no batteries. It also can charge a cell phone.

You know, it's so obvious, but it's true.

I'm in hazardous situations all the time for work. We talk a lot about avoiding them in the first place, but once you're IN one, what do you do? The obvious and smartest answer - get out of it! Then you can figure out how to call for help or mitigate damages or anything else, but the very first thing is to get yourself out of the situation.

It's all about thinking...hmm...what would I do in that situation ? If you've thought it over a little bit, you'll react better. Staying calm and thinking, are your best defense.

One of the first things they taught us in recruit school, (way back when) was not to kick in doors if the structure might be occupied. The reason ? Many fire victims are found at the door. They remember from hearing as a child to stay low and crawl under the smoke. Then they stand up to open the door and are overcome by heat and smoke.
