And now the final question of the profile workshop! And perhaps the most difficult because of the lack of topical guidance -- or not?

Most matches answer "Not at this time." It would be better for them just to leave it blank, which I think means the question is not even displayed with the profile.

This is the place to pass along any important details about yourself that haven't been brought up yet. I believe that any previous marital status and children (if any) belong here. As do any strong deal breaking requirements you may have. But think long and hard about insisting on anything, and express it as positively as you can.

Just ask any questions, I will answer honestly (maybe too honestly).
Still just a kid a heart. Favorite color is red. Eat most any kind of food except seafood but am particularly fond of Italian.

My Must Have and Can't Stand are more Would Like and Would Rather Not Have, please view them in that fashion.

This is, as am I, a work in progress and I keep getting better all the time.

Well the "official" acronym stands for Society for Creative Anachronism.

However, many have also applied to it the meaning of "Society for the Consumption of Alcohol", "Society for Cleavage Appreciation", or "Society of Consenting Adults."

I, however, tend to stick to the original meaning, and let others do what they will.

I thought of this section like Melman does, initially ... a place to put something that other people would find deal-breaking, that didn't fit elsewhere in the profile. I put something along those lines:

I'm an animal rights person -- just letting you know. Most of my friends don't share my views, and it's never been a problem. When we eat together, they eat meat, and I don't. I'm well-differentiated and can appreciate and accept people who are different from me. Would I marry a meat-eater? ... h'mm, yes, if that were the only thing wrong with him! (haha).

I wasn't having a lot of success making contact with people. So I edited my profile in general, and put (innocuous) job info in this section...

I simultaneously pursued 3 careers: software engineering, body therapist, and whitewater rafting guide. I have wide-ranging interests! and like to find new things to explore. (My Occupation says I'm retired and I didn't mention work anywhere else.)

I'm still not having much success. I really don't understand why I'm getting so little response from matches (and yes, I know all the usual answers re giving it time, unpaid members etc., and yes, I've edited my profile, expanded preferences, etc.)

See, you're making the same mistake I made, and that countless others make. Your problem is that you're not getting many (any?) active matches. But you assume that nobody is interested in you. So you start taking the edges off your profile, making it look less distinctive. Eventually you get to where you're pleading for your matches (if you in fact have any) to just give you a chance.

You haven't quite done that (yet). The change you made is just fine. But you thought animal rights was important enough to mention; clearly it's an important interest to you. I would have left it in, although probably just as a single sentence stating your interest in it. For sure, that last sentence (about marriage) isn't necessary.

I know it's rather generic, but I also feel like sometimes people try to cram every interesting detail about themselves in their initial profile and leave not much to discover later...rather than make one last pitch about why I'm such a great person, I figure I'll let the rest of my profile peak for itself, end on a pleasant note, and "ask for the sale".

Is that much better than "Not at this time." ??

I agree that it's not a place for an essay or a laundry list (none of the questions are...), or to plead about how wonderful/cool/sweet/etc. you are.
