it was the *dump* across from the hilton (i think its a hilton... some luxury hotel anyway) that is right by paddington station. fortunately i brought a can of lysol with me.

Well that was fascinating; learing how they organise dating in the colonies.

In England it is customary to telephone the girl's father before the date to discuss intentions and career prospects and the like. Then the man must learn one of Shakespeare's sonnets and recite it at the door of his new lady friend. His butler will help him into his smoking jacket for this task. Ladies usually wear tiaras and something understated from Primark.

They will then ride in a hackney carriage to an East End Pub where they will have 'a right old knees up' before queueing orderly for fish and chips for supper.

Later they will toast the Queen with a pint of tea and have a drunken brawl in the street. After being cautioned by the police they will get the last bus home all the while carefully ignoring each other and texting absent friends.

The second date is of course, more complicated, but rare enough to warrant the effort.

So, as you can see, the differences are minimal (particularly along the eastern seaboard of the US) and we're pretty much ready to start mingling.
